History
The island is believed to be part of China 's Leizhou Peninsula 500,000 years ago. The human activity here has a long history tracing back 6,000 years. The original native in Hainan is believed to be Li nationality.

Han nationality moved in gradually from Han Dynasty onward. Hainan first became part of China in the "Spring and Autumn" Period at 200 B.C. Emperor Hanwuti established two administrative centres in Hainan after conquering the southern part of China in 110 B.C.
During Tang Dynasty, additional administrative centres were established, and later Dynasties of Sung, Yuan, Ming and Qing also set up various government offices for the administration of Hainan. The island received its current name 1,000 years ago because of its location in the South China Sea ("Hai" meaning sea and " Nan " meaning south). Other names for the island are Qiongdao, Qiongzhou, or Qiongya.

Hainan produces pearls, crystal and sapphire and the rocks and sand of the island are said to be white, so it is called Qiong, meaning "jewelled paradise". In fact, "Qiong" is the abbreviated form of Hainan Province. Beautiful as it has always been, Hainan was surprisingly used as a place of exile in ancient China . Many high-ranking officials were sent here during their banishment. The official and poet Su Dongpo of the Song Dynasty was the most outstanding among them.
Historical Events on Hainan
According to historic material, Hainan was under the administration of the Xiang prefecture in the Qin Dynasty. It was set up into two prefectures. Zhuya and Dan'er in the West Han Dynasty (100 B.C.) and in 46 B.C., the emperor Yuan substituted the Zulu County for the two prefectures.
In the Nanbei Dynasty, emperor Liangwu established the system "Zhou" for Hainan and it is called Ya Zhou. Two prefectures, Linzheng and Zuya, were set up in the Shui Dynasty.
In the Ming Dynasty, Hainan was called Qionggzhoufu, with Dangzhou, Wanzhou, Yazhou and 10 counties under its administration.
In the Qing Dynasty, Hainan became a strategically key point for military defence. In 1890 the government ordered the army, stationed along the coast, to be on alert and be combat-ready to resist the invasion of the French Army. Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Liangguang ( Guangdong and Guangxi regions), decided to build a military battery, composed of five large protected cannons. The Xiuying Fort Barbette, one of the Four Big Barbettes in ancient China .
Qiongyadao was set up in 1912 and Haikou was established as a city in 1926.
In 1948, Hainan Special Administrative Area was founded, which was directly under the State Administrative Council. Hainan Administrative Office was set up in 1951. Hainan Li and Miao Autonomous Region was founded in 1952 and then changed into Hainan Li and Miao Nationalities Prefecture in 1955.
In 1984, Hainan Administrative Area was founded. Hainan was established as a province, with Haikou being the capital and the island of Hainan was proclaimed a Special Economic Zone in 1988.

A New Era for Hainan
A new chapter was opened in the history of Hainan when it was officially made a province after a decision adopted on April 13 1988 , at the First Session of the Seventh National Peoples Congress.
As the 31st province of China , Hainan has under its jurisdiction the main Hainan Island and the Xisha, Zhongsha and Nansha archipelagos as well as other smaller islands and reefs in the South China Sea.
Nowadays, Hainan is the largest one of China 's special economic zones, encouraging foreign investment, trade, and tourism.
